Great is Thy Faithfulness!

Amazing things have happened in the last twelve months. In 2021, even in the midst of a global pandemic, political unrest and numerous other challenges, First Presbyterian Church gathered  together to celebrate God’s great faithfulness to His church and to His people over the last 175 years. As our anniversary celebration winds to a close, many of us are asking “What’s Next?” How does the Lord’s faithfulness for the last 175 years inspire us as we begin the next 175 years? What is God going to do and what is He calling us to do in 2022? These questions bring to mind a quote by one of our late, historic pastors, Rev. Dr. Patrick D. Miller. On the 100th anniversary of FPC, Dr. Miller told the San Antonio Express News,

“It is our hope that the entire year may be used as a period for giving special thanks to God and for doing some things in our church worthy of such an occasion.”

In 1946, Dr. Miller’s hope was that FPC would not only celebrate God’s faithfulness in the past, but that the church would do something worth celebrating 100 years in the future.

In 2022, do we believe that God is still faithful, and that His church can do something worth celebrating 100 years from now?

We do not often look to the book of Lamentations for inspiration. This grief-stricken dirge by the prophet Jeremiah is not a cheery “pick-me-up.” The name of the book says it all. Lamentations is five chapters of desperate brokenhearted angst over the total collapse of the nation. And yet, in the middle of his lamentation we discover Jeremiah’s declaration of faith:

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.

(Lamentations 3:21-23)

In 2022, the Lord is going to do something worth celebrating through FPC. Our task, now and in the months to come, is to dedicate ourselves through the use of our resources, our time,  and our opportunities. As we turn our eyes to the city, our neighborhoods, our families and the nations, the Lord is challenging each of us to engage our relationships, our connections, our spiritual gifts, and our God-given talents, for the sake of His compassion and truth. We may respond in faithfulness because God the Father is first faithful with us.

Grace and Peace,
– Rev. Dr. Bob Fuller
